Project Overview

We developed a dynamic and data-driven platform using WordPress and Advanced Custom Fields (ACF Pro) to manage a large dataset of courses and colleges. The core goal was to create a personalized course recommendation engine powered by a comprehensive interest assessment test. Users complete a 200-question test, submit academic and preference data, and receive customized course and college suggestions. They can also save preferred courses to a wishlist for future reference.

Challenges

  • Managing and filtering a large dataset of courses and colleges based on complex user inputs
  • Designing and integrating a long-form interest test with approximately 200 questions
  • Capturing multiple layers of user preferences post-test (subject, grade, qualification, exclusions)
  • Providing a smooth user experience with large data and personalized results

Solutions

  • Built a custom filtering algorithm to match user interest test results and additional inputs (subject, grade etc.) to the most relevant course and college data.
  • Developed a multi-step form interface using jQuery to ensure smooth navigation and save progress. The backend was optimized to store, process, and analyze a large volume of test data per user.
  • Created a structured user input flow post-assessment that allowed users to provide additional details, which were stored in meta fields and used for dynamic filtering.
  • Used AJAX and optimized queries to load filtered course/college lists in real-time without slowing down the site, maintaining fast performance across the platform.
